Talking Point: Switch 2 Owners, Should Xbox Embrace Nintendo's New System?

Absolutely and why not? It's good for everyone when everyone can play what they like, where they like, how they like, and with who they like.

Platform warriors aside - more sales keeps more jobs safe and in turn keeps more games coming. It's win win imo.

I'm still on the fence on buying a switch 2. I am not convinced that it will be worth it. I definitely don't plan to buy 3rd party games there if i get one. I have much better options to play those games that aren't locked to a single device.

Even though I don't plan to buy 3rd party games on a Nintendo device, xbox should absolutely put every single one of their games on the platform.

I think it's just a matter of time. They'll port everything previously released on PS on Switch 2 eventually.

Definitely, it would be stupid not to now they are releasing games on the PS5.

@Kaloudz Microsoft is a 3 trillion dollar company and yet they lay off THOUSANDS of employees at a time with rumors of more coming from the Xbox side of things.
Having Xbox games on PlayStation and Switch has only hurt Xbox console owners because it's a one way street. PS and Switch have exclusives and get Xbox games, while Xbox owners get none of those games.

Making money didn't stop Microsoft from closing Tango or Arkane....or from cancelling games.

If Microsoft wants to further kill their console brand and go full 3rd party they should definitely support the Switch 2. If they actually want to sell their own console and future handheld it doesn't make sense to do so.

I get wanting to keep a mascot(s) on platform, like Mario or Mickey in Disney’s case, as that drives brand. But it still has to weigh in at the cost/benefit analysis of profits versus overall brand drive.

Overall MS would be wise to continue tossing games on Switch 2, especially considering how huge the Switch 1 install base was and S2 is likely to meet or exceed that.

I truly believe the biggest money makers for MS would be tossing Oblivion on there alongside the Fallout franchise, with Fable, Forza and Gears being the next biggest money makers on Switch 2. Avowed and Starfield would also be welcome additions, but I don’t believe they’d print money like the others would.

I would def double/triple/quad (in some cases) dip for copies of those on Switch 2. A few of those don’t run great on Steam Deck, but given S2’s extra oomf, I think they’d run pretty decent.

@TheGameThrifter Having plenty of money does not mean a company will just keep throwing it at something they obviously decided to be poor long term investments.

There is nothing to stop Microsoft from releasing exclusives and still release other titles for Multiformat on their next console.
Sony have been getting by on just One current gen AAA First Party exclusive game a year for Years now, no reason why Microsoft can't do the same.

Exactly. They're a 3 trillion dollar company, not a 3 trillion dollar charity. I have no idea why Tango got shuttered (and honestly, I don't think anyone will ever know) but to suggest that they have the money so should put it up for the sake of it, is not going to keep them in the 3 trillion bracket - and climbing.

As for Arkane, they shut themselves down by spending far too long on a game that was met with lash-back. It costs an eye watering sum to keep a studio running (wages, bills, rent, equipment, licences, and more) year in and year out. If a team isn't pulling its weight - they're not safe. MS may well be one of the largest companies out there, but they're not waking up and shutting studios and firing people for giggles.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but money is all that matters. Selling something to more people across more devices, is a sure-fire way to maximise chances of profit and keeping studios open, jobs safe, and games thriving. I've said this for a long time, this is the right direction the industry needs to move towards.

Exactly. Exactly right you are. I mean look at even Square Enix - a company that's categorically been pro-PS for decades, and even they have decided to go multiplatform from here on out (despite one or two instances) because they know that exclusivity is no longer sustainable.

No I don't think they would print money either. I think they'd do "well" but I don't think they'd sell in the same instances as the other games you mention. I mean Forza on Switch would be ridiculously profitable (let's not forget MS made a deal to put Call of Duty on Switch too) and further to that, Forza Horizon 6 - whenever that comes out - will no doubt be multi-plat from day one across PC and all consoles - and damn, that will sell like hotcakes...

...and so it should. More players means more support, which means more content and a thriving community. I'm not sure why people would argue against that.

@Rog-X You realize the entire reason that Xbox sales have flatlined is lack of exclusive titles and belief that Xbox is the next Dreamcast?

Also, the reason there's no live audience for the Xbox showcase is because every game is going to have a PlayStation Logo and launch day one on PS5? They knew people would boo and be ticked off, so they cut the live audience out of the equation.

If PlayStation gets all PS exclusives and all the Xbox games, why buy an Xbox? I understand some people love the rental service Game Pass, but that's not enough to spend $600 or more on the next console when you're getting less content.

I think people aren't realizing the importance of competition in the console space. If Microsoft continues to give up in the console space, Sony can do whatever they want, can charge whatever they want. Sony is already getting away with their worst generation ever. They don't even need to show anything first party because MS helps Sony fund more exclusive games that Xbox owners don't get.

@Lup If you're an Xbox console owner, it has hurt you. Developers aren't going to keep supporting a console with a low install base. They aren't going to optimize properly for it even if they do.
PlayStation gets Xbox games and PS games and more 3rd party games.
Nintendo gets Nintendo games and Xbox games.
Xbox gets Xbox games and less 3rd party games.

That's how it hurts Xbox owners.

Why would Microsoft keep funding a loss leader with hardware? It continually drops quarter after quarter and they have basically pulled out of most territories already....

Yep, they should support switch 2 because it keeps continuity in their direction of travel.

To everyone in the comments saying it dilutes the brand, they're the next dreamcast etc. look how hard they are working on making Xbox and PC a unified storefront. They're not competing with Sony and Nintendo now. There's your answer.

Here’s the problem with MS and Exclusive that a lot aren’t seeing. Most of their games could not be their exclusive “mascot”. Of all their studios, even prior to acquisitions of other studios, not one has a Mario-like mascot that’s been able to drive brand - Banjo and Kameo were the closest that MS has gotten.

Almost all of MS studios prior exclusives have been either mature like Gears and Fable, or specific genre like Forza or Flight Sim. Massive sellers for sure. But not drive 100m sales sellers. Even Sony realized that they needed a Disney like character to drive mass appeal, so Sackboy was born. But that still is not Mario or Mickey. Their current and brand driving mascot is actually a license - Spiderman. When Spiderman is talked about in the gaming world it’s automatically connected to needing a Sony platform or PC. Kratos is their second mascot, but due to maturity, is not a mass appeal franchise - aka you can’t walk into a GameStop at any age and buy it.

As proven by Sony, it’s super difficult to create a brand driving mascot on a mass appeal spectrum. That’s also MS’ failing as well. Not exclusivity. Creating something completely exclusive worthy.

And in that regard I don’t think most of what Sony has is in that same category either. Kratos and Spiderman should def be multiplat as well. Sackboy was a great start, and if I’m not mistaken, Astro Bot is another that should be focused more on as PlayStation mascot.

MS should beef up and have Rare boost up Banjo, Kameo, and Conker as MS mascot leaders and exclusives if they truly want to get into a better brand drive for the console itself, and use all the other franchises as a way to lead players back to Xbox home by tossing those characters and references to them in their multiplatform titles. And/or grant exclusive content on their home console. Nothing major that makes others feel alienated for playing on another platform, but something like Marcus Fenix in CoD on Xbox only. Small nods like that.

The idea being to create a spider web across games that lead back to the center and make people think and associate more with Xbox.

Currently as it stands there’s not much I say I NEED my Xbox for. Fable….. that’s pretty much it. And again, that’s not an exclusive issue as much as it is brand drive and recognition. I’ve got a bunch of friends that only got Xbox just because of Fable. This should be the telling factor.

@Lup People need to look at the high point to this generation. 2021 saw Xbox sales breaking records and they actually won NPD. I understand certain factors like Pandemic were in play, but it's no mistake that holiday 2021 which saw releases of Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5 and Flight Simulator back to back to back caused such an increase.

2022 Microsoft release 0 AAA first party exclusives.

They have been so sporadic with releases of first party exclusives that we never got a chance to see what could happen if they had multiple years of solid exclusive game releases.

Microsoft believe everything is like COD, but we've seen how most of the games they put on PS didn't do well. Doom didn't do well on PS, Indiana Jones didn't do well on PS, Pentiment, Grounded, Hi-Fi Rush all flopped on PS.

All they did was hurt their own brand.

@TheGameThrifter It's a future I am sure MS has accounted for and it's a future I'm sure they're prepared for. That said, MS are hardly throwing every game out to other platforms right now. They're throwing a lot, yes, but it's not 100% (yet). All we can do is sit and wait to see what the future brings, but does it really matter all that much? Xbox isn't going anywhere (as a brand or a platform) anytime soon. They didn't just drop all this money on acquisitions to tuck tail and run now.

I personally don't think Xbox has ever been as strong. Their output is phenomenal and Game Pass alone is just outstanding. Easily the best deal in gaming and it just keeps getting better.

Microsoft have laid off a lot of staff, you're right. Though, let's not pretend this is exclusive to MS, because it isn't. Studios have shut right across the industry, and layoffs have happened pretty much bi-quarterly, right across the industry. It's the dark side of doing business...

If a studio pulls their weight and their product sells well, they're safe. This is the same for any sale, across any sector, is it not? People blaming MS for successfully running a company and not blindly throwing money down the drain need to learn a thing or two about cash flow...

I don't trust businessmen to have a gamers thoughts in their mind, otherwise the Xbox One wouldn't have happened. Microsoft will make short term gains with this strategy, but long term they are losing a lot of market share in the console space.

To the meat of the matter though, I'm all for their current course of going multiplat with a fair few of their games and I would disagree - Xbox has never been stronger. As a consumer, this has been their peak since 360 if you ask me.

Yes they can do what they like it is their business, but I think they are creating a hanging on a thread for Xbox fans.

I think Microsoft should stay with their systems.
After what I saw and heard so far, the Switch 2 doesn't seem to be worth it at this point.
It's just a machine for Mario Kart World and some sharper Switch 1 games.
Almost every game from the Summer Game Show is not coming to Switch 2. And I'm not interested in 3rd party games on Switch 2 if I have a Series X at home.

@OldGamer999 I guess the biggest issue we all face (despite where we all individually sit on the matter) is the uncertainty. We just don't know how this will play out in the long run...

Will Game Pass be a thing in 10 years? Will it be a multiplat service? Will Xbox be making yet another console in 10 years? No one knows. What we do know is that a lot can happen in even half that time so all we can do is sit and wait.

What we do know, is that MS has found a way to make a crap ton of money... and if that works for them, I'm all for it. Though, really, when it comes to it, all we can do is watch this space.

Putting your games on other platforms is really good for your own platform. That's why Sony and Nintendo, both with platforms several times more successful, put their first party games on all platforms. It's the path to success, not a way for a company to give up on their platform and its fans and still make some money.

I would like to see more Bethesda games on the platform. Skyrim was fun on the go. Other than that I really just want to see xbox work out their parity issues because it feels (note I said feels) like them trying to get ps5 games ported slows ports anywhere else. At this point I am back to waiting a year to two for anything announced on ps5/series x to see if the switch family gets it. I simply don’t want to double dip anymore. As far as porting anything non Bethesda or call of duty i don’t really care.

To answer the article question it seems Microsoft have given themselves very little choice other than to embrace Switch 2. Through their own actions they have weakened the Xbox console as a serious contender in the hardware space. They started down the path of 3rd party publishing and now they can't really turn back.
They've all already shelved their handheld system so I wouldn't be surprised if their next console is indeed their Dreamcast moment. Worse case scenario? They pull the plug on it altogether.

Halo MCC and Forza Horizon 4/5 would be amazing on Switch 2!

@AccessibleDaydream I completely agree. Sadly I think FH4 lost it's licences so I suspect FH5 will be the one that goes over.

I don't know about storage on the Switch 2 as I haven't read into it - is it big enough for these games?

When you play on your Switch 2, PS5, Apple smartphone and the first thing you see is a Microsoft logo when you start playing your next new game… does it really matter your device of choice? Let Microsoft Trojan horse themselves everywhere and let’s see where we are at in a few years…

Yes definitely the switch 2 could and should get a load of games from Microsoft halo gears the lot if it's going to playstation it would be silly not to bring games out on the system it's going to sell so so much I'd be even tempted to buy one once it gets proper 3rd party support ✌️

@OldGamer999 Another aspect to think about is that over the past few gens we’ve seen the trend of consoles becoming more in line with pc to ease developer woes when it comes to optimization and coding. Both Sony and Xbox are now pcs with propriety OSs, and Xbox in particular is just a modified version of windows.

Xbox as a “console” going forward is a silly notion, but a cheap efficient gaming pc with unification to your pc store fronts…… now THAT is what will sell and push forward Xbox as a “console”

Bonus points to them if they make ONE console with the ability slot in an upgraded graphics card if the consumer chooses. Instead of having two skus, one sku with the ability to boost.

I don't know mate. I regularly visit gaming sites reading articles and the accompanying comments sections, but I hardly see anyone concerned that Microsoft will quit the Xbox hardware business and how will that affect the console landscape.
If anything the hardcover fans only care that the plastic box they religiously support stays king of the hill even if it's the only show in town....
Personally, I hope Microsoft will support the Switch 2 with all their games the Ninty system can handle

What I always enjoyed about game consoles was that each one offered something unique to the system, but as time has drawn on that has increasingly become less of a thing. Now they're evolving into PCs, albeit with none of the benefits but still shackled with the draw backs of the walled garden.
Perhaps many a gamer are happy to accept this evolution of the traditional console, but speaking predominantly as a PC gamer I see very little reason in further console investment. I mean, why invest in an inferior version of something I already own?

People saying Xbox should port everything to Switch 2, you guys do know that it wouldn't be able to handle most of the Series X/S titles? There's no way they can get Hellblade 2 to run on it.

A bunch of third party games were announced like RE9 with no Switch 2 version. You buy Nintendo systems for Nintendo exclusives, then you combine it with either a PS5/Xbox/PC to play all the third party stuff.

Yeah, I do think Xbox should embrace Switch 2 and bring some of their Iconic IPs to another audience.
They can start small with just Halo Master Chief Collection and Killer Instinct. Then Hi-Fi Rush. Because that game is awesome.
Ever since Xbox Game Studios decided to port their games to PS5, slowly but steadily, they have made good money and have more players playing Xbox IPs and really enjoy them.
When Gears of War Reloaded launches on PS5, it´s going to be massive. More people will play one of the best third person shooters and it will have cross play.
The multiplayer aspect will be huge.
The reasons I still own my Xbox is mostly to play Xbox games trough backwards compatibility, but I also play Gamepass to try out new games and then purchase them in physical media or not depending on how much I end up enjoying them.
And since Xbox does not seem to go anywere in the near future, as long they keep making games that I (and many other people) want to play, that is all that matters in the end.
Just my take on the matter.

@Xboxian360 360 was it's strongest era, for sure, or at least from a consumer standpoint. What I said above (or at least what I meant) was that this is the best Xbox has been since 360 peak.

I'm sure (happy to be corrected) there are far more gamers now than there were then - across platforms and PC. There's enough room for all platform holders and PC to thrive and make money. I see it less like "who has the biggest slice" and more like "what slice is best for me" and the answer to that is, and always has been Xbox.

I've embraced it. I went to Walmart at the crack of 8:00 AM to get one, along with a MicroSD Express card. Expensive, but I appreciate the improvements made in this sequel. I LOVE sequels!

@TapeLoader as a pc gamer, you’d be correct. Xbox moving to a “pc console” however isn’t aimed at you. It’s aimed at the same market as Steam Deck and traditional console gamer. Those that want to just toss a game in and it’ll work without tinkering, without downloading drivers, and without the pain of dealing with Windows. 🤣

I grew up on PCs. My first experience was with DoS way back when. Grew up through the 80s and 90s, saw birth of the GUI, and the rise of the internet. About 15 years ago my pc blew during a thunderstorm, and I had JUST built the rig 4-5 months prior. Couldn’t afford to build another, so I went console only and haven’t really looked back. Ended up getting a Steam Deck last year just so I could have a bit of a pc experience, or full fledged if I choose, but without all the hassle.

That’s the market Xbox is aiming for, and it’s a good market to cater to.

I’ll use a good recent example for you. MH Wilds. I’ve followed the news about about it, and by a large margin the PC crowd is having the most issues, while Xbox and Ps have largely been ok.

So MS is aiming for, to quote Todd, the “It Just Works” crowd.

The latter I agree, the former not so much. For the average console only gamer Steam Deck still requires a modicum of PC knowledge to run. Most console gamers I know who bought a Steam Deck soon traded them into CEX or other retailers because of the "tinkering" required.

You have remember, the majority of console market is very casual. They don't frequent places like this and lack even the most basic technical knowledge.

The reason why there is no live audience is because it's far cheaper doing what the other console manufacturers do for theirs.

People love the Xbox Gamepass service because it's amazing value for money, all those Day One first and 3rd party games at No extra cost VS Sony's buy our Premium subscription and get just old games whilst also having to pay full price for Day One games that are included with Gamepass at No extra cost,

Then there's the fact Sony lock you to their Digital store for Everything, whilst Microsoft allow you to buy new games and subscriptions from 3rd party at much cheaper prices.
If you buy an Xbox First Party game (and now they are including more 3rd party titles like Expedition 33) you get the PC version Free and vice versa, whereas Sony Milk you for every penny and charge you twice, they even make you buy a subscription just for cloud saves WTF! they are Free on Xbox.

Sony's joke of a digital game refund policy, download the game and you are stuck with it, just terrible, Microsoft allow you to try before you buy on Xbox.
So It's far cheaper to own an Xbox whatever next gen console will cost, it will still be far cheaper and better value to own an Xbox or Xbox/PC hybrid than a PlayStation.

@TapeLoader I concur, it’s the same reason I really enjoyed moving over to console only. Ease of usage (I don’t have time as a parent to tinker), and each one having their own environment. Nintendo has grown theirs like a well maintained garden for MANY years. Sony and Xbox have struggled to cultivate the same environment, both largely relying on third party exclusives to try to win this “war” instead of turning inward and trying to figure out how to grow the garden, they hired lawn care specialists. And the difference shows.

Someone mentioned it above tho, Xbox taking the steps to get on as many screens as possible and making it so whenever and wherever you boot that game you see XBOX, is going to go a LOOOONG ways to growing the brand into something stronger.

The days of consoles are indeed coming to an end, primarily due to file sizes and such. At the rate things are expanding even pcs will barely be able to keep pace unless something drastic happens. If 4k is already producing games above 150gb, just wait till 8k.

Between processing bottle necks and such, and piracy, devs and publishers are going to force the cloud aspect to negate those issues. And it’ll happen sooner than you think. Likely we’ll see the shift next gen, with the following gen being exactly that.

Edit - And I’ll say this about Steam Deck, it requires far less tinkering than I’ve seen with Ally or Legion! Lol. This is, unless you’re trying to run the latest AAA title like Baldur’s Gate 3. In that case yeah it requires some steps to dial the settings so you can get anywhere near Xbox or Ps5. But most other stuff I’ve booted just works without issue. Went on Steam and bought MH Rise during a sale, booted and worked fine outta the box. Oblivion remaster did too - tho I ended up tinkering with graphics to better suit my taste (I don’t like motion blur and such)

Tinkering on PC isn't anything like it used to be. Hasn't been for almost two decades. It's extremely rare I've had to go into the settings with a game these days, they just functioning from the off. Everything else is just preference. Of course one should always adopt good PC maintenance.

That being said, even that is beyond the average consumer who spend hundreds of pounds on mobile phones whose features they use less than 10% of.
That is the danger of a console/PC hybrid as a mass market device - most people are lazy and equally as much not too bright. It's why I absolutely believe console gaming will eventually be replaced with one a button press app on your tele and the like.

Enjoying my switch 2 so far and would definitely consider some MS games to play on the move, especially forza, perfect dark, fable and flight simulator (if possible).

Well, MS’s physical releases on PS5 have been key disc games, so it’ll go well with the key card games that all but two third party Switch 2 physical launch titles got. (I bought Cyberpunk and Rune Factory Guardians of Azuma for my S2 since they were actual game releases, not those key jokes)

But MS releasing games like Forza Horizon 5, Indy and others for Switch 2 can only be a good thing.

@Kaloudz storage shouldn't be an issue. The switch 2, for now, can use microSD Express cards that go up to 1TB.

We all know they will anyway, so answering that question is pointless.

And they shouldn’t. Why? Because everyone knows that people will buy a Switch 2 (even PC players) because of the exclusives. If Xbox had maintained strong exclusives, with a bit more hustle and proper marketing (like Nintendo does) they could’ve now stayed in the competition.

But the truth is that’s not what they really want. It takes too much time and effort and being a third party publisher is simply more profitable. Satya can just buy himself a yacht or whatever expensive stuff he can afford thx to this new strategy.

Anyway same blablabla as usual. Some Xbox fans think it’s amazing, some others think it’s crap (including me) and that’s it.

Xbox/Microsoft games on Switch 2 seems like the move. An Xbox handheld would be probably fail, in this armchair analyst's opinion. Xbox has been shuttering studios and putting its own properties on other platforms a good amount already. Getting Nintendo exclusive games along with Xbox titles on the Switch 2 is a better deal than getting just Xbox titles (many of which are multiplatform anyway) on their own dedicated handheld.

Quite simply, I love my series s and my ps5 pro. Still prefer my series x mainly due to quick resume and a better interface.

I have a switch 2 now and Im enjoying that too, but its not a competitor. Id personally live to see xbox gamepass on switch 2, but know that wont happen. Id be equally happy though to see forza horizon 5, since playing that on the go is essentially a dream. (And not on a crappy 800lb steamdeck, which i sold because it just wasnt being used)

@dskatter that's fair. Theoretically they'll be far more accessible over time than the Xbox expansion cards. Walmart has a 512GB microSD Express for $65, which is the one I'm using, and it's fine.

@AccessibleDaydream Yeah, I actually will be getting that tomorrow as well! But that Onn brand card seems to be a freaking unicorn, no other brand is selling that capacity anywhere near that cheap. But I’ve had decent luck with Onn in the past.

I’m shocked that Walmart of all companies is putting a card like that out at that price. If it spontaneously catches fire, I’ll know why.

@AccessibleDaydream Oh wow fair enough. I had no idea the storage went that high on the Switch. Thanks for letting me know. I guess that means MCC and FH5 wouldn't be an issue at all then.

@Nintendo4Sonic I imagine a fair few of the games shown at the Summer Games Fest will come to Switch 2. It will be like Switch, where the Switch 2 ports are announced separately, like in Directs, with most of them arriving months later.

I think there will be a Direct in the next couple of weeks.
