Today's the day for Tainted Grail: The Fall Of Avalon on Xbox! We included this RPG in our list of "10 exciting Xbox indie games to look out for in May 2025", and it seems like it's lived to the hype - at least for the most part.
Over on Steam, Tainted Grail has a "Very Positive" rating based on 4,600 reviews so far, with the most recent reviews actually amounting to an "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating. There are obviously a lot of comparisons being made with Oblivion Remastered, and it seems most people are impressed by what they've played so far.
allclearas on Steam: "This game is very reminiscent of the Elder Scrolls format, steeping itself in Arthurian Legend, with a twist. If you like Oblivion, you'll love this! It seems like many others have said, this creation is a grown-up version of the aforementioned."
BadAtTekken on Steam: "From a smaller studio so things can be a little janky and things like NPC schedules aren't in the game (most of them are static) but it's a much more engaging experience than your average Bethesda title with all the mechanics and combat, and a very interesting story and setting."
However, the few professional reviews on the likes of Metacritic and OpenCritic paint a slightly different picture, as the game has an average of 76 on the former and 82 on the latter right now. Still very good, just not quite as good!
One of the main negatives that keeps coming up is the jankiness of the game, with many players and reviewers stating that they've run into bugs and crashing on a pretty regular basis (spread across different platforms).
TheJimquisition (7/10)
"Tainted Grail is a digital monument to jank. However much I may admire its doggedness in the face of its own disrepair, I’ve neither the ability nor the impetus to excuse its most broken elements."
"I have no idea how well this game will land with other reviewers, but I’d be interested to see how consistent the reception is between Tainted Grail and the critically acclaimed - but no less buggy - games produced by a studio that’s backed by Microsoft money and consequently has far fewer ground on which to stand."
Gaming Bolt (8/10)
"Despite major technical issues, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is an exciting “Scrolls-like” that offers a tightly-scoped RPG experience that shows a ton of potential for the franchise and genre."
DualShockers (8/10)
"Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is an adventure to behold, especially for those who are fans of Oblivion and Skyrim. With endless build variety, a beautiful dark fantasy world, an interesting story, and satisfying combat that feels weighty, this game is a great choice for RPG enthusiasts."
The good news is that you don't need to listen to the reviews on this one necessarily. Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon has a free demo on Xbox that you can check out right now for Series X and Series S, and if you end up liking it enough, the full version is £37.49 / $44.99. The demo actually has a 4.6/5 rating based on over 674 Xbox Store reviews.
